Been working on CVOICE a little bit, and just about Cisco Unified Border Elements (Cisco UBE) and having some trouble grasping where and why it's needed. For me, it seems not that much different than the gateway. Can anyone help explain it better?

So far it's not the first thing to not make a lot of sense to me, so will probably be re-reading the book again.

Interesting, never once came across that topic in my CVoice studying... but I did do the 4.x test...

Yep, this is the new one. I think if I could get a scenario where it is really used, it might make more sense. Just have to keep reading. I haven't hit Cisco's site yet, thought someone here might have the simpler explanation to start.

Have to wonder if you thought the same thing I did about the CVOICE material....a lot of acronyms. I thought BSCI was bad, but holy cow there are a lot.

Maybe it's cause I live in more of a routing/switching environment so those acronyms make more sense or were more familiar.

Think I found why you didn't have it Dallas, it used to be referred to as "ip to ip gateway." This link helped me have a little better understanding of it all:

Still feel like I'm playing catch up with all the material. Will admit, have a new respect for traditional telephony guys and how everything has to be setup on the phone side.

OH ya... I do remember the IP to IP crap lol... See I went from telco to networking... So ya, a lot of the stuff was cool for me until I started to get into the H323 material. Just wait until you get to the Gateway/Gatekeeper test...

Yeah, I haven't even begun to start looking at the other yet. Might regret going down this path yet.

Nah, I actually prefer the CCVP path... Main reason I am going down the CCNP as well is because I do a lot of it already, might as well just get the cert out of the way... I do plan on working towards my CCIE Voice at some point in the future.

But stick with it, well worth the hassle!

Main reason I'm doing it, is that Cisco Voip is coming to a network near me soon. Figured I should get a jump start on it and be able to understand better what is running on the network, and maybe help out the telecom folks.

I'd like to finish the 4 tests by June 24 so I don't have to do the CCNA Voice too. Kind of agressive schedule with everything else going on out side of work, so don't know if I'll really make that date. But good to have the goal.

lerdalt,

You can do it :)

I am starting with CCNA Voice, our phones are Nortel (I think) but EVERYTHING else at the college is Cisco other than some HP A/P they got at a "fire sale" - so it is just a matter of time as you said.

I just keep trying to pick up little pieces as I can, I have the 1760-V and a 3800 with the FXO and FXS? jacks for analog and I have a 3524 POE switch and 2 7910 phones on the way.

Just want to learn so I understand EVERYTHING you are discussing above - reminds me of 1998 when I first started to study CCNA - NEVER thought I would know all the stuff my "train the trainer" instructor was talking about :) Just takes time and LOTS of HARD work !!!!!

I hear ya. I have a couple of the mc3810 routers with FXS interfaces on them. Used them when I was going through QoS. Was pretty cool to setup a T1 between them, and make a phone call across it.

I have a 7940 phone on it's way now too. Just got to grab a PoE switch from work to borrow for a bit while I'm going through it all.

I just finished ripping through the CVOICE 3rd edition book by Kevin Wallace, and making a little list of all the acronyms so my second read of it will hopefully make some sense. Only about 170 acronyms that I wrote down.

Think I'm more thinking trying to crank out 4 tests in about 4 months is agressive. I've done it before when I had to finish my CNE. But that wasn't a lot of fun either, and didn't really feel I understood everything then.

Worst case...I have to take the CCNA Voice too. Hopefully I'll already have enough background it won't be a big deal. Just didn't want to take any more tests than I have to.

Thanks guys.
