Any IT guys out there notice that restaurant's POS systems run into about 500 percent more problems around Christmas time than any other time??? I swear this week has been friggin' crazy!!

Everyone have a merry christmas!!

We've actually been kind of slow over here, mainly because people are too busy to do the optional stuff. A small to medium-size issue they'd normally call about gets put off until after the holidays. Case in point: Customer called complaining the master terminal is crashing with TOO MANY NETBIOS ERRORS as the error message (obviously the system is seeing some serious volume, resulting in the kind of calls you are probably getting). He reboots, and everything is ok. So I told him to call me back the next morning (figuring we'd back date the VNETBIOS), and he never called. He obviously had bigger fish to fry.

But yeah, normally that's the case--the greater the business, the more stress on the system, the more stuff likes to break :)

System stress I can deal with, its the user caused problems that drive me nuts. I'm seeing a lot of service calls caused by frantic servers and bartenders poking at the touchscreens with pens, pencils, and whatever else they may have in their hands this year.

That type of "self induced" stupidity can sting to varying degrees, depending on the situation--for example, if the customer is under a maintenance contract (and you're fixing it for free), or if it's something you just installed like a computer that they're expecting to be covered, etc. Or when you're already extremely busy... then it's always an inconvenience, no matter how small. ;)

Just remember guys--or at least some of you--most you don't own the companies where you're employed. Then, it's 10x worse, cuz you could be losing out on money on top of fixing peoeples stupid mistakes! ;)
