CDbl returning value as 0

I am trying to convert a field value to a double so I can format it to 2 decimal places.
=cdbl([amt_gross])

It returns a 0 value on the report. If I take out the cdbl, it returns the actual dollar value from the table.
Any ideas?

I don't have any truly good ideas, but the first thought that came to mind was clicking on CanGrow...
