Hi all,

I have a client that can't reach any aol.com or mapquest.com websites from their office. DNS is not the problem, I have found that I physically cannot reach any aol or mapquest site by physical ip address. Here are two tracert results. The IPs used were ones I resolved from my PC at home.

Tracing route to 205.180.100.12 over a maximum of 30 hops

The ISP (XO Communications) insists there is no problems on their end because they can reach it. Any idea on how to continue? Could it be Level3.net? Any advice on how to pinpoint the problem? I've ruled out the firewall, spyware, dns, everything I can think of. It appears to be a bad router issue somewhere but I'm having trouble getting assistance.

Not all routers are configured to answer ICMP requests (ping, tracert). Sometimes this is due to corporate policy, sometimes it's a sloppy config.

Ask your ISP for a copy of a tracert from their site. Looks to me like they've got a problem at the Philly router. Run several tracerts over several hours and compare the results. If you continue to see fluctuations on their routers, send them copies of your tracerts and remind them of their SLA.

Chances are the problem will magically disappear shortly.

LawnBoy is right!!!. I could reach the aol.com using my internet explorer, but if I try to do a tracert then I am failing at the 5th hop, I am Just going out of my company's network and then it fails at the next hop. I feel most of the network routers will have disabled a reply to tracert and ping to avoid attacks.

Hope you have cleared all the cookies. Tell the ISP to ping your laptop or trace route to your laptop. I feel some routing issue to the adjacent router you are connected to or it could be bad link to the aol and mapquest for the north bound traffic from your laptop.

Neto....!!
