I have just upgraded a laptop from Win 98SE to XP Pro.

No problems during the upgrade, set it up to get on the office network, no problems, downloaded updates and such like, again, no problems.

I then uninstalled some old software...

On reboot - the network connections do not appear. When I go in through My Network Places > Network Connections, I get the following error message:

"The network connections folder was unable to retrieve teh list of Network adapters on your machine. Please make sure that th NEtwork Connections service is enabled and running"

I have verified that this service is running, a reboot did nothing. The device is still shown as enabled and OK within device manager.

Not seen this before, so any help most appreciated.

I have ran the network diagnostic scan through XP help...

All criteria failed:

"WMI ERROR - Unable to connect to WMI service "\\.\root\cimv2"

Have you tried to re-install or better yet update the network card's drivers.

Can you ping 127.0.0.1 ?

Network card is fine as far as I know....no connections show up at all, not just Local Area Connection.

Ping 127.0.0.1 works, IP config shows the address I assigned to it earlier on. I can get on the internet, I can ping/view files other machines in the network.

The network Connections service depends on the Remote Procedure call RPC service is that started?

I saw that article - the thing is the version I have just installed is already XP SP2.

I have since been into the Network Connections to delete some old connections.

The RPC service is started....i'm pretty stumped...

2 ideas, may or may not help. First off try dowloading the newest driver available for your network card and chipset drivers. Second off completely uninstall and remove traces of the current one and then 3rd install the new ones. If still not working ensure you dont have a software firewall blocking them even check windows xp. LIke zone alarm and others. even when you tell it to allow it sometimes does not. The way to for sure find out is to close it.

Tried the drivers - no difference.

Even if I create a new dial up connection, it does not show..

I cant be bothered to faff, i'm just going to set it off reinstalling Windows, that should hopefully fix it!

Thanks for the help anyway :)

Two suggestions - I had a problem similar to this when I messed around too much with the security on my laptop. I ended up having to reset the security back to defaults. See the following article:

Before doing this, though, despite the fact that it says the device is working in Device Manager, I would uninstall the network card completely, get the correct drivers for XP, reboot and install the correct drivers.

i had this problem when i upgraded from 98se to xp. the network connection icon was not showing up in systray. the dial-up icon was not showing up in systray after connection.
i removed/disabled all network connections. the laptop had 3 nic cards. a wireless, a builtin, and a pcmcia nic. i disabled 2 of them and left the pcmcia nic. used network connection wizard and all worked ok.

But have you tried re-installing SP2?

I just reinstalled windows, sorted the problem :)

Surely if it was a SP2 issue it wouldnt have worked for a while and then stopped working?

SP2 was intergrated into the installation you see.

Glad you got it sorted. Re the SP2, my thinking was even if it was integrated, if a particular file in question was corrupted the re-install of SP2 would put it back to the way it should have been. Something definately had become corrupted as it wasent a "check box" type situation.
Anyway no point worrying about it now - clean install of windows is always good :)

Thanks for the help though - The only reason I was so quick to reinstall Windows is that it had been installed for about an hour...and there was nothing to lose settings wise!

I will remember that for future reference though, when a reinstall may not be appropriate!
