I have a dell 8100 series with an onboard netcard
Operating system is windows XP.
I have a cable connection and just recently it has ceased to function I haven't installed any new software. I called tech support from the service provider. they told me that my firewall (norton personal firewall) was causing the problem i was hesitant to believ this as it has been running for close to a year with no problems. I uninstalled the firewall. That did not fix my problem. I have gone through ipconfig and things like that. I noticed that when i run netstat -a there alot fewer ports open than there where on previous occasions. Any Help would be greatly appreciated.

squrl79,

Have you checked to ensure your NIC hasn't failed? Are you connected to a network or just the cable connection. If connected to a network, can you ping or access other network resources? Have you run NIC diagnostics or checked the Dell Support knowledgebase?

Good luck.

Don't be too quick to discount the effects of a software firewall. I have seen many cases where no matter what we did to get someone back online, as soon as we disabled the firewall everything was fine. You may want to try a different one for a while and see what happens.
