BCM 50 2.0 Hard Drive grinding

1. Are key codes on the BCM (like on 400) or Hard Drive?
2. We 2.0 BCM50 in a bunch of 1.0 Hard Drives stock, can I borrow the HD out of the 2.0 and Image over a a 1.0 HD?

We know how to image but will it work? any issues?

The system ID is on the Baseunit motherboard.

I have changed out a few failed hard drives with the same version and the system comes up ok.
It copys the system id from the baseunit then i just reload the licence file.

On a BCM50, the system ID is actually the MAC address of the LAN port.

Thanks guys.

I was told that you can image only a virgin Hard Drive shipped as a replacement Hard Drive (spare part) but you cannot image a Hard Drive thats was in any other BCM because some data coding gets written to the hard drive from the flash on the BCM itself.
Can you verify this?

One more thing!

The replacement hard drives that we had in stock are Rls 1.0 are 40 gigs but the 2.0 inside the BCM50 instock is 80 gigs.

Does it matter if we stick an 40gig in there?
Or any reading problems from the BIOS becuase of size?

A friend of mine used an 80 Gig SATA drive without any problems. All docs that I have on BCM imaging have now been emailed. Happy reading!.

Not that I know of. I have, in the past, imaged a non-Nortel SATA drive with an image I obtained from a new BCM50 and it worked fine. But I did get a call from Nortel asking not to do this again.

Some BCM50 systems come with 80GB hard disks, but only 40GB is used (the rest is unpartitioned). I've checked this for sure on some R2 systems.
I guess it's cheaper for Nortel to purchase 80GB hard disks now than to purchase 40GB hard disks.
