Hi All,

Version. 7.1.3 server w2k3

I have a problem with one of my backups. It starts at 22:10 in the evening and this morning when I came in I saw it was still running but nothing was backed up.

I then checked the daemon log on the backup server and found this:

My problem is that if it encountered a media error and needed cleaning, or couldnt decode..shouldn’t it have just grabbed another tape from that pool?

How do I prevent this from happening again?

Thanks in advance

You have 2 issues:
- Your device needs cleaning or it is defect. The determination is not so easy.
The first attempt is to assume the device needs cleaning.
NW can do this automatically, if
- this option has been set
- a clenaing tape has been inserted
- and the cleaning counter has been 'loaded'

Of course this cannot really help if the device is defective.
If NW can not ecover from a write error, it will mark the media as full, preventing its further usage.
Sometimes NW may even disable the device to block further accesses as well.

- The other problem may arise due to the fact that you have "assigned devices to pools". unfortunately, customers love to do that. Now, if you only have one device assigned to the pool and NW disabled that, of course there is no other device available to help writing to this pool.
This is what you need to consider.

Hi there,

I agree with you on the first part... it did need cleaning and so it was done by networker... on the other hand i do not have any devices assigned to any pool that i have.. and that was what was so strange that it never requested another tape from that pool..

O.K. - if the device is not the problem, then the media. Obviously, there is no other media that can be (re)labeled for whatever purpose.

Make sure that 'Auto Media Management' for the jukebox is enabled. Also look at your media status - a tape can only be relabeled if its status is 'recyclable'. If you run out of such media, then the problem is obvious.
