Seen alot of people with similar problems, so thought I should start my own thread to see if there is any reliable solution to my current problem.

Recently had to recover my Exchange 5.5 site, and as a result upgraded to Exchange 2000. I was informed by CA to apply SP4 to my Arcserve 2000 Advanced Install, and to the Backup Agent for Exchange, which is on a sperate MAIL server. Since doing so I have managed to get the Agent to configure, and now I am able to backup some items at the Brick Level.

However getting a full online backup of Exchange DB's is very important, and when selecting the Exchange Database's as a whole, there is nothing to display.

Therefore does anyone know of anything else I can try? I personally wouldn't mind upgrading the agent to the latest version, but I do not see the need to upgrade Arcserve 2000 to Arcserve 9 when it works so well in other area's.

Does the Arcserve 9 Backup Agent fo Exchange work with Arcserve 2000? Is it a viable option, because if I am going to have the same problems, I may as well fix them in my current agent?

Any help, hints, clues would be greatly appreciated, as I have been battling with this frustrating issue for a week now.

Regards
Chris.

I ran into several problems with Arcserve 2000 and Exchange backups. CA's instructions are way off the mark.

I solved the problem you're running into now by installing Arcserve 2000 SP3 first, and then SP4. Do this on both the server and the client. When I went straight to SP4 (w/o first applying SP3) it did not work. Good ole CA and Arcserve!

By the way, it is SP3 that makes Arcserve 2000 Exchange 2000 compatible.

Thanks for the heads up on SP3 making the Backup Agent for Exchange compatible with Exch2k. Followed the instructions, and it now works. You are right CA's instructions are a bit ambiguous.

Important note for anyone trying to install the DBA.Exchange Agent from SP3, make sure you open the SP3.exe file from with Winzip, because if you don't you will not extract all the files needed to complete this process.

Thanks again
Chris.

Interesting. But nextime you can search for presence of this key in the registry:
IsExch2000 under
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ComputerAssociates\ARCserveIT\DSAgent\CurrentVersion\Agent\dbaexch.
DWORD, value should be 1 after upgrade to Exchange2000. I had this problem and this helped.

Thanks for all advice. Installing agent from SP3 then applying SP4 has done the job. Checked the registry, and it looks a whole more like its for an Exchange 2000 server. Backups now working fine, as long as I use the correct backup agent account in the security tab of the Exchange Database.
