Hey everyone,
For all of the servers we have ever built, we have ordered a quantum tape drive with backup exec quick start. My boss likes some features of the backup exec, mostly that he gets emails telling him if there were any issues in the backup process. We have finally decided to try the Windows Server 64 bit, but have now found out that backup exec is not supported on any 64 bit OS.

So, I am wondering if it is possible to have the built in Windows Backup Utility email the status on backup jobs?

Thanks all for the help!
Jesse

I don't know about your initial question, but if you really like Backup Exec, you can still remotely backup a 64 Bit Server. At least with version 10. It just can't be a media server on a 64 bit machine.

Honestly - no.

However you could setup a batch script to email the log on a schedule...?

Cheers,

Steve.

Hi again,
I figured I would have to make some batch script.. The tape drive has already been installed in the server and the customer wants to backup from the server. I guess the easiest thing to do would be to regularly remote in to check the logs.

Thanks for the help,
Jesse

We recently upgraded our servers to W2003 srv and encountered the same problem, in the end I used the old W2000 srv as the media server, this server also has a large RAID and a tape library attached now, all the agents backup to disk and then in turn that is dumped to tape, this enables us to have very quick access to backups (via disk) and also the backup window is increased, as the dump to tape can take its sweet old time.

Just an idea.

That is a good idea too. I will have to re-look at the client's old server and see how much disk space it has. I might just be able to put the new tape drive in the old server. Awsome, that just might work! Although, as you know, people are lazy. They aren't going to want to have to copy their needed files over to backup server, they will want this done automatically like magic...

I would think about backing up the server remotely, but I beleive you have to have a specific version to do this for backup exec, am I correct? I dont think the client will want to spend any more on the server.

Thanks again,
Jesse

We use NT Backup on a W2K3 Standard server and I have the logs emailed to me.

We created a blat for it originally but now we'veadded to end of the cmd that gets called by Scheduled Tasks to run the backup.

I won't have access to the server until Monday but I'll post our script when I get to work on Monday.

Cheers.

i have seen script for it as well but i find the easiest way is to have a batch file that copies the log file to the web site and then the local person at the iste can have a look at the log and then report it if any problem

An example script would be awsome! I am wondering though, is this a VB script then?

Jesse

From memory, Backup Exec has no problem running the server agent on 64bit it is just the media server.

So, I have Backup Exec agents running on the file servers (Windows & Linux), which backup to the media server (Win2k)

We then use a logon script to map a drive to the relevant file server, via GPO.

epod69:

I'm sorry, I walked into a mess of work this morning and completely forgot about sending you a sample script. This is the portion of the script that emails you the log and assumes that the log is found in c:\ntbackup.log. You need to add it to the end of your ntbackup script.

Code:
c:\windows\system32\blat c:\ntbackup.log -to [b]myemailaddress@mydomain.com[/b] -subject "[b]servername[/b] Backup Report %date%" -f backup@[b]mydomain[/b].com -server [b]exchangeservername[/b] -hostname [b]serverbackupison.mydomain.local[/b] del list.txt

For the subject you can have whatever you like. I use the server that is backed up and the date. To email it I send it through my exchange server as coming from backup @ mydomain.com so that I can set up a rule in Outlook to dump the logs into a separate folder.

If you need to help with the ntbackup script let me know and I'll see if I can help you.

Cheers.

BackupExec version 11d was just released, and it now supports 64-bit OS as the media server.
