Any Reason To Keep My SAT Terminal?

I was wondering if there's any reason to keep my old AT&T SAT Terminal hooked up. I have a PC in the same room that I was thinking of hooking up . The PC is on the network, but I was thinking that it might be a better idea in the event of a network outage to directly connect a PC to the cable where the SAT terminal was hooked up. I have tried hooking the 25 pin cable into the serial port of the computer and seeing activity in hyperterminal, but I couldn't get anything in hyperterminal. Has anyone ever set up a PC directly connected to the switch using the port that the SAT terminal was on?

Avaya Techs do it all the time during installs. I assume they are running terminal emulation software and/or ftp software.

We rarely use the SAT but I would never get rid of it. Too many unknown situations where I want to know that I can talk to the PBX if I have to.

You can use peer-to-peer network cable (reversed) to connect your PC NIC directly to RJ45 connector on the back of the CLAN card in your switch. It will work in case of network failure. Why would you want to keep SAT? I do not know. I do. I have the same setup as you do - PC is in the phone room and on the network, but I also have SAT connected to the switch. And I have been using it occasionally when the PC was busy for some reasons and I needed to make changes to the phone system.

You can hook that cable that is attacted to the "Terminal" port on the back of the Switch- to your PC serial port using a 25 pin to 9 pin straight thru serial cable, (you might need a 25 pin to 9 pin cable if your PC's serial ports are all 9 pin. If your PC serial ports are 25 pin, then just use a 25 pin to 25 pin. You'll have to look at the Gender of the connectors, I can't remember if male or female or on which end).

Then install Avaya Site Administration, and create a new Switch profile, then just select "Direct Serial Port Connection" from the New Switch Wizard.

Once you get into the S87XX Series Servers from Avaya, the SAT will go away. If you have A G3, then keep it until it becomes obsolete
