Can Access be used for recording time in one of its fields, and provide an alert if an event is 'due'? It's not normally a job for a relational database.

A date/time field can store time. In order to set up some type of alert you could have a form open with some code in the Timer event that checks the current time with a stored time and possibly opens another form or performs some other task.
