I have asked this in the past and still I am looking for an answer to why my machine pegs out at 100 after a reboot. I have disabled ALL services that can be stopped without crashing the system and made sure I booted in safemode and also removed all my video drivers and audio drivers and still the problem is there. If I reboot a few times I get the machine to run normal at 0 in idle. I also completly disassembled the machine right down to the CPU and cleaned everything! I cleaned off the old thermal paste and replaced it with fresh TP. The machine looks brand new but still it pegs at 100!

anyone have any ideas?

Have you been able to see what process (in task manager) is consuming all or most of the CPU?

Ken have you tried to boot up with a KNOPPIX CD, to see if it is HARDWARE related or just VISTA related?

I have checked task manager and there are no services or programs consuming the processor time. I do however see over 700 threads when this occurs. I though that this may be a hardware related issue but have not been given any support bu Asrock despite numerous attempts to contact them. Badbigben, I have never heard of that program. how will it show if it is hardware?

KNOPPIX CD is a LIVE LINUX CD...

Great for testing Hardware related problems... If you run it and it behaves just like Windows, then you are sure that it is Hardware which is causing the problem...

Another Live CD you can look at is BartPE. It is more like Windows (once you create the CD) if you don't relish the Linux experience.

Have you ever run ChkDsk on the machine? Before you do see my comments in this post.

That said, the drive manufacturer will have free diagnostic software to thoroughly check the condition of your drive.

Have you tried updating the Bios, or at least setting it to run in Safe Defaults?

Run the System File Checker program from an elevated command prompt by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your Vista DVD handy.

If they don't work you could try repairing windows itself by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched. Links in this article (look at the Upgrade options where in your case you would upgrade your Vista to itself and thereby perform a repair).

Have you considered it might just be a flaky install, corrected only by a format and clean install?

This is your original post.

SOMETHING is consuming the processor...if it's not VISIBLE in task manager it may be spyware or a virus. You didn't mention it but I assume you have run a virus and spyware scan?

Also - have you booted the PC without a live network connection?

run normal at 0 in idle

I'm a bit confused by this, the system idle process should always be up near to 100% when nothing else is running.

And if something else is running 100% CPU then the system would seem to be locked up?

update:

I installed a fresh copy of Ultimate 64 bit and it booted at 100% and stayed that way for over 1 hour at which point I shut it down. I think at this point it may be the garbage motherboard from AsRock.

also check this similar problem out:
