For the record. I solved my problem by converting the Quark files to .eps documents. From there, Mac creates .pdf files by simply dragging an .eps (among other formats, maybe) into the Preview icon.

I followed steps Andrew aka apepp suggested for creating a pdf file from a Quark document.
I feel like a nitwit even admitting this, but I can't find the file that got created. It did not appear in the folder it was exported to, nor did it turn up in a search by filename.
What did I do wrong...
Using Mac OS 10.3.9, I am trying to create pdf files in Quark 6.5.
Each time I open Quark, I get the following message: "Suitcase XT plug-in could not find a running copy of Suitcase. Suitcase XT functionality will be disabled."

I'm trying to remove background color from an image I want to place on a Quark page. I have been unable to do so with .jpg or .tif files.
As suggested by spamjim, I used Photoshop to convert a .jpg with erased background to a .psd.
