    What size to make LUNs on a consolidated cluster

    Hi All I have to design a consolidated SQL environment i.e. a bucket and I have no idea what DBs they'll migrate, what size LUNs (or formula) do people use for their database and log luns? In a cluster environment each SQL instance gets its own virtual server. So what this suggests to me is...

    System DBs and Instances all on one LUN

    Thanks all. So basically I'll have to re-carve. And as per my previous SAN experience you have to design for I/O throughput first then for capacity.

    System DBs and Instances all on one LUN

    Thanks for your reply. The LUNs are dedicated Database tier so won't be sharing with other uses but it's a consolidated service so there will be a lot of different databases with different load profiles. I assume we can have multiple named instances per node as long as we have multiple...

    System DBs and Instances all on one LUN

    Hi All I've been tasked with creating an SQL cluster which a number of systems will use for database services. What they've given me to work with is a bit different to how I'd lay it out. What I've been given is two TB LUNs on a mid-level FC SAN. So the SQL binaries will go on local disk and...

    agentless monitoring for servers only

    Hi All First I must confess my reading on AEM was pretty skimpy. But I did get the impression that this was quite a big deal to setup, only captured crashes and would be hard to justify to our AD team. Also if I google on agentless I just get pages of AEM material. Basically we're an internal...

    newbie SCOM config advice on targetting

    Short answer was I wanted to setup alerts by role based group. In MOM2005 I would have created a management pack called CARS SQL, CARS IIS etc. I figured out eventually best to keep the management packs organised by server role and make up server groups and views. Then gave permissions to the...

    SCOM Monitor event rule not triggering

    Bunch of really short training videos here. One shows you how to setup a ping monitor - try that in your environment and see if it fires at least will let you know if the problem is environment or your config http://ianblythmanagement.wordpress.com/2007/01/26/scom-2007-mini-videos/ Good luck

    Careers and the cloud

    Thanks for the reply Don Sorry about the TLAs - you got me on the ETLA TAM = Technical Account Manager (Microsoft) NGO = non government organisation (i.e. not for profit) BA = business analyst PM = project manager Yes but that's just the push. What I'm hoping for is advice on how to...

    Careers and the cloud

    Now I'm no newbie so it feels a bit odd to be asking this like a grad but in light of http://redmondmag.com/features/article.asp?editorialsid=2606 I'm getting a bit worried about my MS skillbase. Our TAM currently takes any opportunity to beat up the internal guys and push MS hosted services...

    Career Guidance

    If your employer is an NGO they either: - have an advanced DB/CRM package to track donations, campaigns etc. - don't Doing a bit of SQL study in your spare time is easy enough so do that anyway. See if you can get involved with the inhouse DB work - doesn't matter plaform it will give you...

    newbie SCOM config advice on targetting

    From here: http://systemcentercommunity.com/forums/p/3654/11340.aspx "best practices would dictate that you create the monitor, DISABLED by default, with a target of the most specific object type (class) possible. Then, use an Override to ENABLE the monitor for the group. " But this is for...

    newbie SCOM config advice on targetting

    Hi All Worked a bit with mom 2005 struggling with the transition. What I need to do is monitor an IIS hosted webapp (called CARS) on a farm of windows 2003 blades. My group monitors the platform - i.e. hw, os, iis. Another applications group has to be given access to monitor the app. But for...

    decommissioning a test exchange 2003 server

    Got it resolved through the GUI in the end. One of the admins has a semi-test server - we did a 'move all replicas' onto that. It still wouldn't delete the pub store after that. Shutdown DEV2 and did a delete server from ESM and that worked so I assume the server being online was the key factor.

    decommissioning a test exchange 2003 server

    Unfortunately wasn't so easy... My problem is that since SP2 you have to rehome the public folders. If I try and delete the public folder store I get: "You cannot delete this public folder store because it contains folder replicas" The public folders and public folder instances under the store...

    problem cancelling a process

    Hi All My first problem is that my restore dates available in the BA client don't match my backup dates showing in the tsm operational reports but I'll post that in another forum to keep things brief. So...I tried the restore and it demanded tape 006881l3 which wasn't in the library. So I...

    using win2003 routing with a 2950

    Sidestepping the issue of vmware support for 802.1q for the moment I assume that the physical nic in the vmware host server will need to support 802.1q? Something like an intel pro 1000

    using win2003 routing with a 2950

    newbie question. Setting up a home lab. Got a 2950 on the latest image. Have a win2003 rras VM doing routing. Two clients on different subnets can ping each other so seems to be working. Now I'd like to setup VLANs on the 2950 and have RRAS route across them. Is it just a matter of making...

    RRAS - weird routing problem

    Somebody on an MS newsgroup pointed out the 'duh' ping wants reply packets and the dsl router doesn't know a route back to the 172.x net. Router is a asus wl600-g anybody know how to set a static route on those?

    RRAS - weird routing problem

    Thanks James I've setup RRAS and I'm pretty sure I've tried it with the first nic having no gateway but I'll retest.
