An older gigabyte MB system, nothing special... was Ok for long time, now after some general software work it goes to a dark screen when shutting down but doesnt finish... power still on..
It completes the process if started in Safe Mode.. displays Windows is shutting down... and does..
Nothing strange in Device Manager.. no other problems I can see,,, In Power Options everything  is set NEVER and press button is SHUTDOWN..

Any ideas?

Check your system for viruses, worms and trojans.  Especially run the free program CWShredder.

Could also be a driver installation issue. Anything installed recently just before you noticed the problem?

This does not fix your problem but usually forces a shut down just fine:  Start, Run, type: rundll.exe user, exitwindows

When you do finally figure out the cause, please post what worked for you.

Thanks for the suggestions.... I've run CWShredder, Spybot and Adaware but not joy.

Typing in that command does close windows down but only to the same non-powering off..

I'm going to try one of the freeware shutdown utes to see if that works.. even just to test it..

Thanks
