I have a friend that has a DVD reader (DVD-ROM) with his laptop. Apparently, let's say you put a DVD movie from a North American version then switch to another version (let's say a DVD of European version), it warns you and tells you if you watch to switch zones (or regions). After you do it 6 times (alternating between north america, european 6 times), your DVD reader locks up and doesn't allow you to read any other DVDs (movies rented or bought).

Is this true? Is there such a thing that's about zone-switching and that you are only allowed to switch regions/zones up to 6 times?

Yes, it is true that the DVD Player/Drive locks the last Zone...

No it is not true that it allow you to do this 6 Times, only 5 times...

Ben

If it works don't fix it! If it doesn't use a sledgehammer...

There are programs on the market to bypass these rather pesky problems, i believe the use of AnyDVD will descramble the reigon code so you can watch anydvd reigon free, therefore not having to change the settings.
Not sure of a link at the moment i think google will be able to help you

Regions were set so the Major film companies could set an price according to the region. Some may call it price fixing, but that's open to debate ;-)
As pc's are shipped around the world, it was easier for the firmware and software people allow you to set the region yourself so you could choose if you wished to pay over the odds because you happen to live in Europe instead of the USA, despite having double the population, therefore potential market.
And they wonder why many people have no sympathy when the Majors comaplain that people are ripping cd's / dvd's
Rant over..
