How can I tell if a phone system port is functioning or not?

Our Debit machine plugged into the analog port of our phone system and over the weekend has stopped working.

Is there a way to tell if the port is fried or if the problem is somthing else?

The phone system is an NEC Elite 192.

Try the station port at the mdf with no x connects see if you can get dialtone there first

If there is no dialtone at the MDF / block then swap the card with a known good one and recheck. Not too often a single port goes bad.
