HP970cxi/win2k resume on startup

In line with my previous post I have a friend with a similar problem. With win2k OS, HP970cxi printer connected via IEEE 1284 cable to port lpt1 (bios has ecp/epp or epp set). If the printer is on when the computer is booted up the printer feeds a sheet part way and then pauses with the resume light on.  To print he must press the resume button which causes the sheet to be ejected with some "smiley" faces (or other symbols) in the upper left hand corner.  If the printer is off during the reboot the same thing happens except no printing.  Does anyone know how to disable this feature.
Thanks.
