IIS & Excel 2000

It seems Microsoft has changed the extensions of Office 2000 products. In our intranet we have links to excel spreadsheets, they work with 97 but not with 2000. We have manually tried to add the new extension (application/x-msexcel) following TechNet's instructions but this doesn't work either. How can we do this? Do we need to load the Office Server Extensions on the server?
