DBSII + odbc

I'm looking to access a dbs11 dataabse on a unisys clearpath mainframe via odbc. Howvever i am told that this is quite difficult to do and unltimately inefficient.

I am looking to do this to download info into SAS.

Does anyone know if an odbc driver can be used efficiently for this process or another good option which means I can acess the data form SAS???
