We are running MS Exchange 2000 with an Internet based email checking company in front of that.
Every so often when somebody sends an email to one of our users the email goes to the user about 50 times.
This is random and is usually personal emails.

The recipient gets the email the first time but it seems as if the sender automatically keeps trying and trying to resend.
I have no idea where the problem lies - can I rule out our exchange server???

Do you have a pix firewall ? I believe that if you are running 5.2.5 or less (dont quote me) there is a possibility that it will create 40 - 50 duplicates under certain circumstances.

Sorry, I have searched for a reference and more info, unable to find either.

Hope this helps

Cheers

Morning tpluskota

My knowledge of firewalls is at best very poor. We had the same duplicates problem here. It looks as if you may need to upgrade the to the latest version, or alternatively there is a workaround where you disable the the smtp fixup protocol.

We did the workaround, which didnt work, then we upgraded which didnt work, we now suspect that our isp is running an old version of the pix software, will be progressing it today

I can only suggest you search for the workaround (use link above as a starting point then google it) and if that fails, upgrade to the latest pix version which should sort it. I believe it did not work for us as we have a very strange setup where we have internet connectivity via a local college who in turn get it from a local university, the college are suspected of not pushing the boundaries of technology too hard and probably have the old pix software. On the other hand, I would probably guess that you have a "proper " ISP who are almost certainly up to date with all the latest software versions and patches.

Anyway, try the workaround (if you can find it) if not try the upgrade, one or the other should work.

Once again, apologies for not being more helpful, but as stated earlier, i know next to nothing about firewalls

Cheers

Paul
