I have a problem in an Exchange 5.5 server that I cannot seem to fix no matter what I do. I need to forward external mail to the local recipient and to an internet address for them. I have created custom recipients with the internet address and set these as the alternate recipients in the local mailboxes. I have also unchecked the "Disable Automatic Replies to the Internet" box and both sets of addresses are allowed to send external mail in the Delivery Restrictions list in the IMS. But the sender still gets
" A restriction in the system prevented delivery of the message. The MTS-ID of the original message is: c=us;a= ;p=bete fog nozzle,;l=BFN60303271658HY4GGKYK MSEXCH:MSExchangeMTA:BFN_EXCHANGE:BFN6" for the local address. This only happens when there is an alternate internet recipient but the messages are still delivered to both addresses.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I've seen this twice before recently on this forum. Try doing a search to see solutions.

What you need to do is to allow mail relay to the server of the internet address of the custom recipient. Your exchange server is probably setup not to allow mail relay (as it should be) but that is what you are actually doing by trying to "relay" from an internet address to an internet address.

Look under "connections" in the IMC settings.

hope this helps,
Dana

I have both our existing email domains routed as <inbound> under the Connections in IMC. I am afraid that if I set these to relay, the server will become an open relay. Is where I should be setting up the relaying? or is it somewhere else. Thanks.

Yes, it's in a different place than you are looking.
Click on connections.
open the IMC properties box.
Click on connections TAB
Specify by host box.

You don't want relay all mail, just the one server.
