something i have not set up before and wanted to know what is best practice

customer is going to have about 30-40 phones

they want each phone set up with a permanent extension on it which is fine

they also want me to create about 10 additional users that can login to these phones at anytime

what i was going to do was just create these users not assign them a physical extension just program an available one

what i am curious to know is how do you guys usually set this up, a login/logout button on all the phones?

if anyone can elaborate that would be great (or point me to some documentation that i was unable to find)

I have created a login shortcode.

Something like:
5XXX
Extn Login
N*2580

They just put in 5XXX to login and then 5XXX to login to the previous user.

Sorry should have been more specific. You can use a leading digit that is compatible with your numbering scheme, I chose 5. XXX is the extension. the 2580 is the login code.

ill definitely give that a try in the lab...

to logout do they have to type in the previous extension or can they just press a programmed logout key and will the phone revert back to the permanent extension?

The roaming user must have a logon code set ( User > Telephony > Supervisor Settings > Logon code ).
In the users list they have a red icon ( Hot Desk ) added.
Usually I create a shortcode like #XXX, N*N, Extension Login, the login code is equal to the users phonenumber.
To logoff they press *36 and the original user of that phone gets automatic reactivated.

N*N is telling it to use the code they put in as the passcode?

also is *36 a default shortcode

For a user to logon on a station they have to dial *35*<extension number>*<Logon code>#, that is a default shortcode.
The #XXX code is entered as #<extension number>, the code executed wil send <extension number>*<login code> to the the IPO and if extension number and logon code are equal the user logs on.
*36 is a default shortcode with the function User logoff and no parameters.

Yes, a hot desk user can login on any extension on any site. The users profile will walk with him/her with all the settings belonging to that user including R6+ user licenses.
