We would like users to use their smartphone to access the corporate network, but we are not sure where to start securing the network. We would like all tablet devices to conect via wireless and access network resources. How can you enable Windows authentication etc?

That would depend on the type of tablets they have. For instance, Firefox just released their Android Browser and claim it supports Windows NTLM authentication.

Other than that, you would have to find out if any apps out there support it, and whether or not the tablet's existing browser can navigate through shared resources.

For the most part, tablets aren't engineered to access secure network resources like a PC would. So you may find that not everything you want is accessible through them.

Ignorance is not necessarily Bliss, case in point:
Unknown has caused an Unknown Error on Unknown and must be shutdown to prevent damage to Unknown.

If the users will be accessing the network from public WiFi, you really want to set up a VPN with SSL or L2TP/IPsec CRT for corporate access.

It's very easy for others to listen to the data (even https if connected long enough) as per this article:

For iOS (iPhone/iPad) or Android, this means using something like the Cisco VPN app as those VPNs don't support SSL
Blackberry does support secure VPN out of the box ... security is one area that the other devices haven't yet caught up with.
Windows 7 only supports SSL via Exchange
Nokia's Symbian built-in VPN client requires Nokia’s VPN policy servers

Once the VPN is setup and secured, it's just a matter of determining what resources to allow them to access

The users will be connecting to our LAN & WAN via wireless connection, but we need to ensure that they are using AD authentication. Mostly for Internet, Email and file server access.

If using public WiFi connections ... set up an SSL VPN with AD auth.

How to best do this will depend on your infrastructure ... server OS, router, etc
