I want to backup my MCD 5.0 to an external ftp server, i.e. MCD is 192.168.2.2 and ftp server is say 192.168.1.110, do I need to create a network element for this to happen? I have programmed the ftp server in the "external ftp server" form. If not in the network elements what programming is necessary?

You don't need anything in the network elements form for backups. Just configure a server in maintenance.

I'd tell you a UDP joke but I'm afraid you won't get it. TCP jokes are the best because you always get them.

external FTP server is all that is required

You have not told us how it is failing.

Are you able to access the FTP server from an IP address on the Controller LAN? Can you read/write?

Username ftp

Path c:\ftproot

when I go to "backup" and want to click on "FTP server configured on node" I cannot select it. What I am not sure of is this the procedure I should follow?
I can access the FTP server (ping)from my computer plugged into my IP phone and the FTP server has read/write. I think I am missing something basic as this is the first time I have tried this.

1- be sure you can FTP to yourself. Log into your laptop and ftp to localhost and use those credentials.
This checks to be sure the service is running and the creds work.
2- Check your firewall to be sure it's not turned on in windows.

Also the Path does not seem correct, it will be relative to root directory of your login.
C:\ is a windows naming convention not FTP. Try / as your path.

The phone system is typically on a seperate VLAN. Is there routing between the Voice VLAN and the data VLAN where your laptop and TFP server are?

Maintenance and Diagnostics>Backup and Restore>Backup is where you put the FTP server and start the backup.

just wanted give an update on this challenge. It is working now and that is the good news, there was two things I had wrong, one was my server that the ftp server is on rebooted and I didn't realize that so the ftp server was not logged in and the other thing was in the "external ftp server" form where it asks for a path I added c:\ftproot and I got an error when the backup was started. After reading the docs again I removed that and left the field blank and the backup did go to the ftproot directory.
