Another gold-"plated" milestone...We're starting our Lucky 13th Vanity Plates thread (since our previous thread has exceeded 100 posts and is slow in loading).

Over Spring Break we travelled from Utah to Phoenix (via Las Vegas)...Saw these great plates/tags:

CODE

SLZBAG (On an Arizona Ford SUV)

JAGROAR (On an Arizona Jaguar Sovereign)

SSAFLAH (On a Nevada car which I didn't get until I read it in my rear-view mirror)

Santa, somehow I don't think that the ex-wife would want that plate.

It's plausible, I will concede, that the ex-hubby had the title and registration in his name alone, which would prevent her from changing the plate to a general issue plate.

Yes, Arabic is the correct word. The '3' is an Arabic numeral.

I think perhaps the reason you see the mix is that you would not be able to fit the entire reference with Roman numerals ( JHN III XVI ). Nor could you use just Arabic numerals ( JHN 316 ) because that's a standard three letter three digit license place and may already be used.

You asked about the ball game reference and that reference is to Rainbow Man, who himself references John 3:16 at sporting events, i.e., ball games, on his t-shirt or by holding up signs for the camera.

I heard about that. There was also a guy with the plate NONE (in Nevada, IIRC), who had the same problem.

Poor planning of of the ticket violation system (and poor training of data entry operators) are to blame. You have manual entry of a plate number, and no way to indicate on the paper ticket that there really is no plate (i.e., the vehicle is not registered or the plate is missing/stolen, etc.), you'll get this nonsense. Maybe once police departments move to electronic ticketing there will be a checkbox to indicate that condition. In such cases, they ought to scan the VIN of the vehicle for identification purposes.

And back in 1979, a couple in Connecticut with he first names of Irving and Anna had had the personalized plate set IRAN on their car for many years. When the hostage crisis provoked some nasty threats, they opted to change to anonymous, regular-series plates instead.
