My exchange server hosts xxx.local.
Godaddy hosts xxx.org.
Users currently have two accounts setup in Outlook.  Exchange for .local and POP for .org.
I want to add xxx.org to exchange as an accepted domain.
I'd like for users to send using their exchange account to whoever@xxx.org and let the server route mail internally to people with mailboxes and go external to people w/out exchange mailboxes.  Some are in another state and not local.
When I do, I get undeliverable to users who have a godaddy mailbox, but not one on the local server.  Is there away to route userlocal@xxx.org to my server while letting useraway@xxx.org go outside?

Wow. This is so simple, or at least it should be. All your internal users are in the Exchange Global Address List, so there is no need for your internal users to recieve internal email using and address of @xxx.org. All messages sent to usera@xxx.org should automatically route to their GoDaddy-hosted email account. Of course, for this to work your Exchange server must have the SMTP service configured. You do NOT need a smarthost, but you should have a firewall.

That's not what the OP wants. They want, if the user happens to have an Exchange mailbox for the mail to go directly there rather than to godaddy. This is pretty easy to configure on Exchange 2007 (I personally think that the linked article above slightly complicates things - instead of trying to configure a smarthost just select Use Domain Name System rather under the Network tab for the connector)

One challenge: this seems to be the Exchange 5.5 forum. If the OP is actually using Exchange 5.5 then I am not sure this is possible. But it has been a number of years since I last worked with 5.5.

Need more information possibly as I may have misunderstood.

If they are off Exchange give them a subdomain.domain.com target address and MX that to the other server. Then it will route out.

Add that as a new SMTP recipient policy on the other server.
