XP Pro Won't Boot-Up In SafeMode or Last Known Config - agpCPQ.sys

I get the bluescreen of death when trying to boot.

CODE

A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
.
If this is the first time youve seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a driver is identified in the Stop message, disable the driver or check with the manufacturer for driver updates. Try changing video adapters.

Check with your hardware vendor for any BIOS updates. Disable BIOS memory option such as caching or shadowing. If you need to up Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup Option, and then select Safe Mode.

When it is booting in safemode I see all the drivers loading until it gets to agpCPQ.sys. At which point it stops and goes to blue screen message above.

it looks like

Will it boot up if you remove all easily removed hardware such as USB etc?

Can you boot into the Recovery Console?

I switched harddrives and made the "original/sick" drive the secondary drive. Then I logged into XP Pro and simply renamed that file in the old "sick" drive's windows/system32/drivers directory to something like isaPNP--CHRISCHANGED.sys just so I could come back and rename it later back to its original name. Then I copies the file from the good OS to the old. It worked in a way... now that error is gone butthis one shows up.

Do I need to do the same method with ohci1394.sys?

NO... NO... go back into safemode and rename the file you changed back to its former name...

then POST more info on your system...!

e.g. is it an OEM (HP, DELL, etc.) install, from a recovery CD/Partition... what CPU is installed?

and NO the AGPCPQ.sys file is NOT the problem!!! the problem is right before that file gets loaded...

see:

When you use a Creative Labs SoundBlaster 16 Joystick with a game port in Windows XP, you receive a "serious error" or a "STOP: 0x0000007E" error message
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=321637

if it is not a SoundBlaster Joystick problem, then scroll down to the section: Similar problems and solutions

also if you are using an NON-INTEL CPU (reason why I asked above):

Error message after you upgrade a computer that uses a processor other than an Intel processor to Windows XP Service Pack 2 or to Windows XP Service Pack 3: "STOP: 0x0000007E"

keep us posted...

I am awaiting a response from BleepingComputer.com on a log file read.  If they cant get this resolved I will back up and try you guys.

By the way, what is wrong with adding the all the .sys files from a good OS into the sick OS?  I can change it back but just curious.

ok so I should bring those files back?  Bleeping Computer guy is getting me nowhere anyway after days.  I will let you guys help me then...

I have a Systemax Computer from Tiger Direct.  It originally was supposed to come with Vista Business but I chose to revert to XP Pro OEM.  It has a Intel(R) Core 2 Quad CPU Q6700 @ 2.66GHz with 1Gig of Ram.  It had service pack 3 installed and IE8.  Systemax would not do much in regards to helping because I am out of warrantee.

I originally had tried to move the program files from the "sick" OS hard drive to the new hard drive using PC MOver.  It made the new OS flaky and some of the programs won't uninstall on that second drive.  For instance... Yahoo IM did that.  It was a mess.  I should have just reinstalled one by one. However I now just want into my old OS so I can retrieve keys and uninstall programs to release the keys so I can reinstall.

It has (I am actaully copying this info off the good OS on second hard drive)..

-NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GT
-NVIDIA nForce 590/570/550 Serial ATA Controller
-Western Digital Caviar Drive (new second drive that actually now has XP installed on it but I really want the original drive's OS to work for at least a little while.)
-2 DVDR Drives
- Primary IDE Channel
- Secondary IDE Channel
- Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller

-IEEE 1394 Bus Host Controllers
-Network Adapters
  *1394 Net Adapter
  * NVIDIA nForce Networking Controller
  * Realtek RTL8139
-Sound & Audio Controllers
   *Audio Codecs
   *Legacy Audio Drivers
   *Legacy Video Capture Devices
   *Media Control Devices
   *Realtek High Definition Audio
   *Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio
   *Video Codecs
- System Devices (long list...let me know if you need)

I have attached a report of the Drivers found in report using xPud.  I have replaced all my .sys files in drivers with same files from new OS.  Nothing helped.  Do I need to bring the old ones back?

Also just to let you know.  My hardware (except for possbly the old harddrive) is fine.  I can boot and stay booted in the second drive's XP install (the one that PC Mover mucked over).  So hardware muct be fine.

When it tries to boot it goes to bluescreen in middle of the boot showing the windows image and the moving bar.

Here is my driver report:

Quote:

So hardware muct be fine.
it probably is...
to test the drive, download on the GOOD OS, the drives manufacturers tool, e.g. Seagate = SeaTools, WesternDigital = WDiag, etc., these can be found on their respective websites... or download the UltimateBootCD, as it has a plethora of diagnostic software, on a bootable ISO...

now most likely all the MICROSOFT drivers are OK, but I am not so sure about third party drivers, e.g. those by Symantec...

now this is what I would do, and in that order:

1. run the drive diagnotics, and if drive is deemed good move onto 2... if it is bad, then back up all data ASAP...
2. from the clean OS, run MalwareBytes, SuperAntiSpyware, and an AV other than NORTON!!!

post back once done...

in the meantime I will discern those logs from the other site, once I have more time, to see if I can gleam something out of them...

I will do the disk check soon but I had done the chkdsk and it came out good already.  Here is a link to my OTL data (just reda down)...

OK, CHKDSK will only check the surface of the HDD, but not it'S mechanics or other important stuff... thus one should NOT only rely on that as a indicator that an HDD is good...

it seems that some remnant of the TROJAN is still active, e.g. MBR, although the removal tool may have gotten the driver, the MBR and unused-space-portion of the malware may still be active, which may cause the BSOD...

so my suggestion:

we need to rewrite/restore the MBR...

skip down to Option 2

Description of the Windows XP Recovery Console for advanced users
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058

once logged onto your installed OS (old drive), at the prompt type the following:

FIXMBR

and see if the OS boots now...

post back...

Cebuy,

If you have any USB thumb drives plugged into one of the USB ports when you are rebooting, please shut down the system and remove them!  Then try booting to safe mode again.  I've read on some other forums that it has fixed similar problems.

EmuDan,

thanks for trying to help, but it would be nice to read the responses as well as the original post, before answering...

see Linney's first response...

I know this post is old but I thought I'd list how I solved my Stop: 0x0000007E error.  My error was the exactly the same as cebuy except the problem file was FTDISK.SYS and I only got the blue screen when I scanned the hard drive (XP Media Edition / SP3) with Malwarebytes.

Solution:
I copied the problem file (ftdisk.sys) from a working XP Pro computer to a jump drive.
Booted the BSOD PC to a Ubuntu live CD.
Renamed the problem file (in my case I found ftdisk.sys in C:\Windows\system32\drivers directory).
Copied good version of the file from the jump drive to the BSOD PC in the same "drivers" directory
Rebooted PC & ran another Malwarebytes scan - NO BSOD error

I hope this helps somebody
