Avast has found four virus's that are locked files and can't be deleted.  I need a utility to unlock them and delete them.

This is an old Gateway Solo, PIII, W2K Pro laptop that my friend used where he used to work years ago.  Looks like the cd-rom drive will not read anything.  It spins up and I blew it out with compressed air but it won't read anything.  So then I tried to get into safe mode which is password protected.  It doesn't like his logon password.  So I'm gettin nowhere fast....
