Vista to XP? 7

I just bought an HP (Compaq) CQ50. The laptop came with Vista Home. I want to reformat the HD and install XP Pro. Is that going to cause an issue with any hardware, say like the graphics card?

The graphics card is NVIDIA GEFORCE 8200M G

I'm asking cause I installed XP Pro and screen has a delayed response time. When I click on a program, move a window around it takes a sec or so for it to respond. So then I thought what if the drivers are not installed? I did a Google search and found the drivers here. That link notes that this driver is for a Vista OS. So that got me wondering, and here I am...

Did you try Option 2: Automatically find drivers for my NVIDIA products, on their site.


Have you tried Disabling (not uninstalling) the Card via Display Adapter in Device Manager and seeing if it improves performance and if you can live with it set that way?

Is your card on Hardware Compatibility list for XP?

Any particular reason you're going backwards to XP? I find Vista to be perfectly able to do what I want it to in a day to day environment, it's drivers are stable and it's faster than XP was on the same hardware.

If we were talking about this 18 months ago I could perhaps understand wanting to go to XP but what with the maturity of the OS and it's drivers I find it unusual that people with new hardware are wanting to go back to an older OS technology.

1. Install the CHIP SET drivers first, if you have not already...

2. this is going to take a bit of editing...

a. download the following driver:

Geforce ForceWare 181.00 Win XP 32-bit

b. extract it to a folder (e.g. C:/nVidia) using WinACE or WinRAR...

c. navigate to the subfolder, and open up the file called: nv4_disp.inf using NOTEPAD...

d. add the following line to the subsection [NVIDIA.Mfg]

This is definitely NOT what I have experienced. Same hardware with Vista is about 35% slower. That is UNLESS you turn off lots of features within Vista like Search/Indexing and a bunch of others, but that's not the focus of this thread so sorry.

linney, I did search NVIDIA and MS web site for the driver, as well as HP. For this card HP only has a VISTA driver, MS has nothing, and NVIDIA has a beta version which doesn't work.

SimonDavies, to start with none of my programs work with Vista, and I refuse to buy the same program for Vista...besides, I just don't like Vista. I still have many reports (from online and people I know personally) who simply dislike Vista...

BadBigBen, that's a little to advanced for me. I'm kinda uncomfortable doing that on my new laptop. If I had a machine I could play with, I'd definitely try this. I'm also afraid that if I mess up royally, then HP won't be able to help me...

goombawaho, that's the same sentiment I have. I know many people who downgraded to XP. I kinda feel MS and computer manufacturers are shoving Vista down our throats. To get XP Pro, HP was going to chnarge me $150 more!

OK, now that I answered everyone, I have more info. I scoured Google and found this.

One of the posters had this great tip, and this seems to work for countless people (copy/paste from the link above)

Go and download this driver packet:

1. Run the install, it will say no compatable driver is detected.
2. Go to device manager and right click unknown vga device, update driver.
3. Dont have it auto search.
4. Select dont search, i will choose the driver.
5. Select Display adapters, choose the have disk button.
6. Have it point to C:\nvidia\Win2k\178.24\English\nv4_disp
7. It will give you a list of models, there are 2 geforce 8200's in the list. Click the first one in the list and hit next/ok or whatever.
8. It will give you the continue anyway option, proceed thru it.
9. Reboot computer and voila, success.

I get the following error after I reboot: The currently selected graphics display adapter can not be used. It was written for a previous version of windows.

It then only displays 16 colors and that's it. I have to look at my monitor in 640x480. Things don't get better until I use the windows generic device driver which is horrible. When I tried this, I was running Win XP Pro SP1. I finally found my SP3 CD, and reinstalled the OS. I'd like to try the above steps again, thinking maybe the issue was with SP1...but I doubt it.

Does this shed any more light on this? Can I use a driver for an older model of GeForce? Say a 7000 series?

What's the chip set drivers? I don't have those. HP no longer sends a seperate CD of drivers like they used to, instead no you just create a back-up copy to install the OS.

Chipset drivers are usually related to the motherboard manufacturer, more often than not they are made by Intel, AMD, or or a similar company.

You could allow this web site to scan your computer with their driving scan tool and see if they can identify any missing or updated drivers that are out there. They wont actually give you any driver without payment but they do give you enough information so that you can track it down yourself.

A program like this freebie is useful for an inventory of your system including hardware.

I got that above when I tried one way of installing NVIDIA drivers. This relates to my post above from 20 Dec 08 13:41

I now need the drivers for the video card and sound card...just found out my sound is not working either. Why can't this be much easier???????

about the chipset driver and the sound driver, for that one I need to know the full product number, e.g. CQ50-100US etc... as there are many different models which may differ in the chipset...

BadBigBen, THANKS! That worked like a charm!!! You have no idea how long I've spent searching and installing/uninstalling drivers and trying new things. I was starting to think I should return this laptop and get a DELL.

I looked at the paperwork, checked the laptop, and logged into my HP account and this is what I find: paperwork and HP site says CQ50Z, laptop just says CQ50.

From your response, I am assuming that the GFX driver worked...

now the CHIPSET and the AUDIO:

go to the above link (tigerbliss) that I listed, 1-chipset/ is the chipset driver and 6-conexant-audio/ is the sound driver...

PS: you may need to install the driver found under 4-ms-uaa/ first, before you install the audio driver...

post back if it worked or not...

Ben, yes the GFX driver worked like a charm! Thanks for that.

OK for the chipset and sound driver:
I first installed 1-chipset driver. It asked to uninstall some previous versions of drivers and I said 'yes'. After it reinstalled, laptop restated, and continues with the install. After finishing the install it asked if I wanted to install the "NVIDIA and ForceWare Network Access manager", I said 'no' to that.

Then, I attempted to install 6-conexant-audio, I got an error saying Driver Installation Failed: Could not find the MEDIA device for this driver.

So, then I went and installed 4-ms-uaa. That went through fine.

Restarted.

I attempted to install 6-conexant-audio again. Got the same error Driver Installation Failed: Could not find the MEDIA device for this driver.

Ok, in the Device Manager, where you will find all the hardware, go to the ones that have a yellow exclamation mark, double click them... there under the TAB 'DETAILS' you will find something similar to this: PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0059&SUBSYS_289510F1&REV_A2

I'll need that code to confirm the drivers and identify that piece of hardware...

Glad the chipset worked and that the Universal Audio Architecture driver installed fine as well...
