bar width syntax

I am using SPSS 15.0 and I am having a problem with output. When I create a simple bar chart with a large number of bars it is producing bar charts with the bars overlapping one another instead of making narrow bars with space between them. I have figured out how to control the bar width by using the slider after the chart is made , but, because I will be making a number of charts in each report, and doing it over and over, I would like to be able to force the bar width from within my syntax. Anyone out there know how to do this?
