help weird comp problem combo, can't access device manager properties

Hi everyone,
I'm a first time poster and I just encountered a very weird computer problem.  I'm running on Win XP and one day, I just turned it on and got a black screen that lasted for a while before my desktop showed up.  I also heard a beeping sound.  After that, I realized that I couldn't move any desktop icons and my quicklaunch taskbar was gone.  The icons next to the desktop clock also disappeared.  I also found out that my settings for microsoft word has been changed.  I started looking around and realized that a lot of things didn't work.   My windows media player doesn't work, sound card doesn't work,  and network connections icons are all gone.  I checked my system info and it doesn't list what kind of processor I have, just the ram.  Also in device manager, I can not check the properties of anything.  I click on properties and I hear the computer work, but nothing pops out.  Also, when I minimize windows, they do not appear in the taskbar.  Instead they appear on top of the taskbar.  Also, I seem to have insufficient memory sometimes when I play a video and other times, the video will not even show up and copy and paste does not work.  My computer was working normally yesterday but now it is so weird.  Any help is very appreciated.
