Hello guys,

I've recently setup a small network on SBS2003 with a webserver and FTP server, all has been running perfectly fine.

Suddendly, this morning the FTP connection has died, i can still see it sat there in IIS.6, and i can still connect to the website for the ip perfectly fine, but when trying to connect to the FTP i get told that the connection could not be established.

I cant see anything noticably wrong, is there somthing i should be looking for inparticular?

Thanks,

Rob

Can you access the FTP internally?

Nope not even through the internal IP.

I'm still quite baffled as to what is causing the issue, it is possible that a colleague of mine started running the security wizard yesterday and cancled out before he got very far, but i've looked to see if i can role back and it cant find any previous policies.

I also tried running through the wizard myself and that does'nt appear to have cured the issue.

The webserver on the same internal IP address appears to be working fine, although i'm yet to test that externaly.

As a further not i've also noticed i havnt recieved my 6am daily reports for the last couple of days, not sure if it is related in any way.

My Server is runing as the DC and DHCP server, but my router handles my DNS requests, this is only becuase i've had bad experiences of switching to server DNS in the past and am a little reluctant to do so.

Thanks,

Rob

Have you re-started the IIS on the server or even just the FTP site?

I wouldn't recommend not using DNS on the server as it can stops a lot of the background windows networking stuff like group policy from working, there would be no problems having the router configured as secondary DNS on the clients.  I've been fixing networks where it was set to the router and it causes all sorts of small problems, also extra things logged in event viewer on log on.

Morning bud, thanks for getting back to me.

I have tried restarting the FTP Site and the IIS Services and it doesn't appear to have fixed the issue.

Nothing appears to be logged in event viewer that is unusual so i'm not sure whats causing the issue.

I've kept the DNS on the router, and the server uses that as its primary DNS, and also issues that as the primary DNS on its DHCP leases, so 'ipconfig' on all the clients shows the router as the gateway and DNS Server.

I'm still confused to whats causing this issue, i've had similar problems in the past and never been able to solve them as there dosn't appear to be any symptoms, the services just 'stop working' without any explanation, seems very odd.

If you have any other ideas i'd like to hear them.

Ok, i've arived back in the office this morning but i've got a few strange issues still.

The FTP site is now alive again and i can connect to it, but when viewing it through ftp://192.168.1.101 i get a list of all the files and directories displayed to me with hyperlinks to them, but it doesn't display it as if in windows explorer.

Any ideas? could be permissions?

Rob
