after loading the dos portion of a clean install of W2K I restart the machine and it loads the items it needs and then sits when it tries to start wk2 for the 1st time. I have done the F5 workaround but I get the same result.
any suggestions?
Thanks in advance

..I'm guessing you mean the PXE portion of the W2K install (built on NT not dos)

...quick questions.. is this install from boot disks or from cd..

if from the cd.. is your bios set to auto load from the cd before the hd?.. or did you manually tell it to use the cd drive for the first run?

..do you complete the partition info + format? .. copy files from CD onto the harddrive.. at what point does it reboot..

Did a killdisk, fdisk, repartition (only one) reformat and then installed from CD.
It tells me that "the dos portion of the install is finished. Remove the floppy disk and restart"
At this point the computer restarts, I get the message about pressing F6 to install a RAID or SCSI driver and it porceeds to load everything. I gets to the point where it says "Starting Windows 2000" in the bottom left corner and there it sits.
There is a work around by hitting F5 at the point where it tells you to press F6 to install a RAID... where you can select the type of computer you are installing the program on. I select normal and it still sits.

The startup is set for CD, HDD, FDD. The order shouldn't matter becasue it is not a bootable CD.
I didn't copy files to the HDD as that part of the install went fine on its own

It's a home build. I am getting to the point where I am about to suggest that he anchor his boat with it an buy a new machine.

I would try updating the bios to the newest version. If it doesnt work then im guessing you got a bad hard drive.

Worth a try before I send it to the fishes
thanks, I'll let you know

I was going to do the bios update but then was hit with today's problem. I now get a message "A:/ is not accessible the system cannot read from the specified device".
I have tried many different FDD's and disks but I continue to get the same message. I can right click and look at the properties on the disk (which is correct) but cannot access the data on the disk.
I have uninstaled the FD controller and teh FDD itself from device mgr. but the problem persists.
I am now at the point where this computer is not about to get the better of me without me finding out what is buggered up on it. [mad]

When I try to boot from the floppy I get "Disk I/O error" "Replace the disk...

Sounds like floppy drive might have went bad. Replace with another floppy drive or borrow one and give it a shot. See what happens.

I have replaced it with 3 others that are good. I tried a new cable as well

hm, check your motherboard for any swollen capacitors. Also try resetting the bios if you have not done so.

CApacitors are OK (had a machine like that once)
Please explain "restting the bios" I can't update the bios without the FDD

ok what I mean by resetting the bios is there are procedures for changing it back to default. Like resetting a router. Refer to your manual as in finding out the jumper for resetting and how you go about it. If for some reason your manual does not say or you do not have a jumper, unplug the power cord from the computer, remove the battery on the board and leave it off for 15 minutes. Then put it back on. That should reset it.

I'll give the battery a try as I don't have a manual. (manual's are for whimps... but thank God there is Tek-Tips)[bigsmile]

Tried the battery but still cannot access the data on the disk in the FDD in spite of being able to see the properties of the disk.
I'm stumped...

Ok have you tried another floppy disc? If that dont work as of right now I dont know what else to say.

Yes, tried other disks too. Maybe someone will spot this and have an idea.
Thanks
