Hi there,

I have a laptop with a corrupted OS on it. I have installed XP into a new directory on the laptop so as to gain access to the drive to retrieve my data. My data is under my old user account in documents & settings but I am getting access denied when I try and access it. The properties of any folder on the drive are not displaying the security tab even though the drive is NTFS. I am logged on as administrator.

How do I get the security tab back so that I can get access to my data?

Thanks in advance,

Glenn

Is this 'XP Home' addition?

If so, this is not available in that version and the only way to see the security tab is to boot the OS in safe mode.

It's strange because the original Os was XP Home but the new install was XP Pro. I have gone into XP Pro in safe mode and have now taken ownership of the files.

Thanks for your help!

In XP Pro you need to disable "Use simple file sharing - recommended" in order to see the security tab in normal mode.

Folder Options/ View is the location for "Use simple file sharing - recommended" .

Excellent! Beats having to go into safe mode.
