Did you try to reinstall the driver?

YOu can get drivers from many driver sites, driverguide.com is one. You sign up but its free.
Look on your device and you will find the make and model.
Then google either the make and model or google driverguide.com. Either way, you should be able to find what you need.

Optical devices NEVER require YOU to load a driver. Windows will pull the information from the drive's firmware, which is built-in. Now Windows will install a driver, but it's usually generic that is configured for use with the firmware.

Therefore, the only thing you can really do is to remove the drive from Device Manager and reboot, or update the firmware (which shouldn't be the fix, but is normally a good idea).

See if this helps(NOTE- It's recommended that you back up the Registry before proceeding with these steps):
1. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
2. Locate the UpperFilters value under the following key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
3. On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.
4. Locate the LowerFilters value under the same key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
5. On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.
6. Quit Registry Editor(NOTE: After you remove the Upperfilters value and the Lowerfilters value, if you notice lost functionality in a particular program, such as CD recording software, you may need to reinstall that software. If the problem recurs, consult with the software vendor for assistance.)
7. Restart your computer.

The upper and lower filter values won't likley be there unless you use Roxio's recording software (I checked on two PC's just now that don't have Roxio or the filters).

[red]Note: It is important that you don't delete the entire {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} folder. Only the entries that ski mentioned inside that folder. Just wanted to make that clear.[/red]

What OS is this? If 98 or 95, you need the drivers that come on a floppy (comes with with all CD drives).

cdogg, if the drivers aren't needed, why do all manufacturere include them with the CD drives? Seems like they are wasting a lot of money! <grin>

Micker377, i thought of that too and was going to answer the same way. Matter of fact, i did answer, see above.
The only thing, i was basically answering his question as to where would one go to get drivers. Not specifically any type, just drivers in general. So cdogg misunderstood what i was doing, lol.

My reasoning was that he was asking for drivers for a rw\dvd and those, likely, are covered by windows installations.
However, I believe there are older cdroms that some windows os's dont have the drivers for, like win 95 and win 98. So i do agree with you. On the other hand i respect cdoggs opinions as well, lol.

The last 10 or so models I purchased did not come with a driver. They come with software (you know like PowerDVD, CD/DVD recording software, etc), but NOT drivers.

If you can give me one mainstream name brand and model sold today that includes the driver, I'll run over to a store now and check the retail box (I have a few buddies that wouldn't mind doing this). If it's in there, I'll eat my shoe!



In order for you to understand that optical drives do not need drivers, you must first understand what firmware is. Firmware is the "reason" manufacturers don't supply driver diskettes! It's also the reason why they release newer versions of firmware, and not newer drivers!

Think about it...why would you have to go to driverguide.com instead of the manufacturer's website? Doesn't make sense. Driverguide is mainly full of junk that end users upload, some legit but others not.

Well, i was talking about a FEW very old cdroms that were supplied with drivers, nothing else. And i pointed that out.
Also, as i pointed out, i only showed the person where to find drivers period. All kinds of drivers.

All the rest, i agree with you. And i pointed that out too. Especially burners or dvdrom, after the cd part of the drive the rest is software driven.

And you are right, you cant find one today, only some very old cdroms had some drivers supplied on a floppy. I have a pile of them.

No offense meant here, but pointing the user to driverguide.com for drivers in general was an unnecessary post. Ski and micker377 also suggested that a driver was needed. So to me, it seems that a majority of this thread is offering incorrect or irrelevant advice, would you not agree?

You did mention later that you only meant older CD-ROMs. But remember, a DVD-RW drive is not an "older" ROM device.

To Ski's credit, however, I'm sure he meant reinstalling the drive, not the driver.

I suppose i should have said the os.

Other than that i as referring to very old cdroms which indeed had separate drivers on floppy disks. they even came with isa slots for the sound, cant remember offhand if they had the same in pci version or not. But there were separate drivers on floppy disks for those old ones.
I wasnt sure what the person was asking for so i told him where to go to find drivers. He did mention rw\dvd but also made reference to a device driver so i was thinking maybe the error message was for something else, and since he mentioned looking for drivers, i pointed out driverguide.com. Further driverguide.com also provides links, whenever possible to the original mfgr drivers and website as well, further, a lot, perhaps most of the drivers posted were originally from the mfgr of the device.
Of course there are some that are mislabeled.
Again, he did mention rw\dvd but i had the impression he wasnt sure, it could have been an older cdrom, it could have been an error message for something else.
I've acknowledged before that you know a lot about this stuff, but that doesnt give you the right to jump all over me, especially when i am correct about older cdroms being packaged with drivers on floppy disks, which i happen to have a bunch of. I also have some of the isa cards they came with as well as a few of the cdroms. Creative was one of the packagers.
I didnt want to put up a big long post to this person, considering i wasnt sure what he was talking about. I figured his actual need would surface. We ended up taking most of the space arguing.
