My Netware 5.1 SP7 server during backup after hours seems to be getting very high CPU Utilization, 90+%. I'm running BrightStor r9.01.When I check server health Cache Performance is suspected. If anyone has any ideas it would greatly be appreciated...Thanks

That is normal during a backup. I wouldn't worry about it at all.  The backup software sucks as much resources from the system as it can so it can get stuff to tape quickly.

This has only been happening over the last month & seems to be on the same day as well...Will this cause the server to crash if it becomes consistant?

It shouldn't be a problem. It shouldn't crash your server.

On Compaq systems, if you have ASR enabled (default is enabled), then it's possible that the ASR will cause the server to reboot if the processor is high for too long.  If this happens, turn ASR off.

Are you sure it is the backup software and not something like the server's compression routine that also occurs overnight?

I have a Dell power Edge 4400, I am interested in the compression issue...I have noticed a large area on the Sys volume of compressed data. How can I investigate the compression of data???

As I recall, volume compression is decided when you install NetWare, but I believe there is also an option in "monitor" to change the compression options (if you chose to make it a compressed volume).

Ah.. nice call..  It might be a combo of both running at the same time also.

Set compress screen=on

That's the command to view the compression activity..  You can turn the engine on or off in the settings in monitor as trevoke mentioned. You can also change the run times etc so if there is a conflict, you can work around it.

The entire volume is not compressed. Size=4GB, Compressed Space=1GB, Used Space=1.6Gb...I deleted some old logs & regained some disk space.

I turned compression screen on as stated above. When I select it, all that comes up is a black screen with the words "compression screen" at the upper left corner???

Well, you're only going to see something on that screen WHEN the compression engine is actually running.  This by default happens at midnight and then stops at 6am.

My backup jobs start @ 1:30 AM. can I change the time or frequency at which this runs?

Maybe changing the compression time...Does it run for the full 6 hours?

We are having period of very high utilization during the middle of the day.  The server jumps up to 100% and no one can do anything.  After rebooting the server everything returns to normal until the next period of high utilization.  This has been happening once a day at different times and we can't find anything unusual happening at those times. Any Ideas?
