I have an e-machines computer with 633mhz processor, 15gb hard drive, 128mb memory, running Windows ME.

I had some kind of problem emerging suddenly which resulted in computer crashes occurring more and more frequently over a period of about 3 days. First only on the internet, then browsing file explorer, then when the computer went into standby mode, then during hd disk-scan upon computer bootup following power-down (only way to get out of locked-up mode). Near the end I did manage to run Norton anti-virus and a new threat there was Adware.gator which appears to have been installed only within the last week (I have had Adware.hotbar for a year also).

At this point I cannot get the computer running. It is already frozen up during reboot when I am given a choice for options to get me into safe mode or other setup options. I did manage to get it into safe mode a few times and it still crached. Startup from my Norton emergency floopy disk, my Norton CD and my OEM (e-machines) bootable CD are all unsuccessful.... lock up early on.

I am not sure if the new virus is related to my lockup problem. On one hand, it does seem like an awfully big coincidence that it showed up at the time my computer died. On the other hand, I would think a virus would not affect my early bootup options, would it?

I am planning to take my computer to a professional for help but I am not sure what to ask for.

My objectives are (in order):
1 - I would like to recover the data on my hard drive.
2 - I would like a working computer if possible. Also I would not mind buying a new hard-drive since I was almost out of hard-drive space on the original hard drive (had used 12 GB out of 15GB).

I see I an get a new computer far exceeding the original computer for $300 - $500 so I don't want to spend too much on trying to fix my dinosaur, but the data is important.

What kind of repair options would you recommend I ask for or consider?

What kind of options are available for getting my hard drive data onto a new computer?

Do you have access to another desktop computer? If so, you can put your hard drive in as a "slave", run virus check online (Trend Micro) and a good anti-spyware program. You will definately have to remove any "Gater" products, as they are number one for spyware problems. What happens is that as your computer gets more and more spyware, they start inter-acting with each other, causing the computer to fail. Once it is clean, make sure your anti-virus is up to date. Then install an anti-spyware program such as "AdAware SE" (available on the net free). I would also advise "SpywareGuard" and "Spyware Blaster" (both free). Sounds like a lot of work? Look where you are now! My son-in-law's computer had over 600 spyware programs when it quit, cleaned it up and everythings OK now.

Yes, you CAN get it going on your own. And Micker377's way would be one good way to repair it.
Just a suggestion, who knows, it may help. Boot up and go into your bios. On the first page you will find a setting similar to "default setup", something like that. Click on that and save an exit. This will set your computer to its standard default setup as it could be that our bios could have been altered enough to cause you not to be able to boot.
So try that first as its real simple, then if no good go on to mickers suggestion.

Thanks guys - good suggestions.

Regarding the Bios... I can't even get in there. The screen tells me to hit F5 during bootup but the computer doesn't even respond to it.

Watch for a blinking curser in the upper right(?) corner of the screen early during boot-up. Laptops often give you a limited time to get into the BIOS.

I found the problem (a few months ago)... figured you guys might be interested.

It was the mouse !!??!!

With a different mouse the pc works find. With the bad mouse everything is locked upon boot-up including the keybaord. Repeated it several times.

Went to my wife's computer and plugged in the bad mouse. Similar results (keyboard wouldn't work). Removed bad mouse and put it good one..l. works fine.

Weird. I wonder if it was a hardware problem with the mouse or what?

Glad you found the answer and it wont cost much!
Well, for sure it was either the mouse or corrupted mouse driver(s). But when it does the same thing in another computer then you know its the mouse.

You never know sometimes, thats why i often suggest things like checking the coin battery, etc, etc. Often a problem presents itself and there are usual suspects to look for and the answer is totally somewhere else, like in your case.
But tt would be weird of us to tell every person to change their keyboard and mouse every time they post here, lol.
While at it, i guess we could tell them to change their monitor too, lol again.
Thanks for posting here, we always like to know for future reference. Glad you got it fixed. I think i would fry or shoot that mouse for all the time and aggravation it likely cost you!
